Another Soundfont Loader Review

I figured that since I use this generator in basically every one of my buzz songs, I might as well write a review for this machine. First of all, the Soundfont loader works relatively well, and gets the job done. One aspect of the machine that I really like it the fact that it references a file location, rather than embed the soundfont inside the .bmx file. It's quite useful when I using say, a 20 mb mega-huge soundfont bank. Unfortunately, it is not without problems. One of my main complaints is that it has a tendency to crash buzz at random times. This happens very frequently when using LARGE soundfont files. (But then again, maybe I shouldn't be pushing the machine to its limits... ;) ) Usually, when the machine crashes, it makes Buzz (and the rest of your multimedia applications) completely unstable until you shut down and restart your computer. Upon loading a .bm(w/x) file containing soundfonts, the loader exibits a strange behavior of minimizing the buzz window. I don't know if other Buzz users have experienced this problem, but its certainly worth a look through the code. Another gripe I have with the machine is that it takes SOOO long to load the .bm(w/x) file with really large soundfonts. But then again, I don't know of any effective solution to this problem other than my far-fetched .sfark loader idea. (See my post in the messageboards for more information) I respect Rout for not taking the moronic route of most midi sequencers that load soundfonts directly out of the soundcard's onboard ram - this might be more cpu efficient, but it is very hardware dependent, and its very time-consuming to load soundfonts out of the awe control panel etc...

I like the sound loader, too! But I've encountered a problem you don't mention in your review. Has anyone noticed, that the first note played is only one tick long? The second and all following sound the way they should. rck! 2001-08-03 by rck

I've got the same problems than you guys ! My computer also often crashes when I try to load large soundfonts (actually when they are larger than 12Mb)...But it also crashes when I used specific machines in the BMX I loaded just before (PSI Drum)...I've got no explanation for this... RCK, my soundfont is also 1 tick long when first played...but it also happens once usually, so just play one measure with soundfonts then put your cursor at the beggining; don't have to reload your song... 2001-08-03 by JEA

I would love to see more of a soundfont tracker and any extra stabilty that can be had. I bought a bottem of the line pent 3 so possibly system memory is a facter 2001-08-04 by edexter

I need that 20 mb soundfont! Where can I get it?!?!? 2001-08-13 by Xytoplasm

btw, if ne one wants really large, or GOOD soundfonts, go to soundsite (search in google, I can't remember the url) They are useful even if you convert them to another format, simply because they are MUCH better quality than most tracker samples.... 2001-08-14 by Aeonsfx (Timff9)
