This Review uses an alpha BTDsys machine, PeerCtrl. Download it here if you don't have it yet, and unzip it to generators.
What/Why:
Because I'm a bit impatient (and don't want to wait for PeerRetrigger to come about), and also because it was recently talked about on the message board, I'm posting this little song demonstrating a retriggering technique I came up with. It's not a prime example of the strategy, as the way it's being used in this song is for a kind of 'background blippyness', rather then an in-your-face drum blam.
How:
PeerEnv has the ability to trigger machines, so I decided to exploit that fact and devise a way to use PeerEnv's with all the old, boring, single-hit-per-tick drum machines.
I first set up a sinewave oscillator to produce a steady tone, then I placed cheapo amps to trigger the oscillator's signal on and off (via cheapo amp's mute). The amps are then connected to four PeerEnv machines, each with a different subdivide setting and routed to a Kicksyn's 'trigger' track parameter. Here, the subdivide, routing, and even number of PeerEnv machines used is up to whatever your project calls for. If you merely want to do triplets with an 808, you only need one PeerEnv. I had to use the Cheapo Amps, because Kicksyn's trigger is not just off/on, so the retriggering has to be switched off completely when not in use.
Now unfortunately, because I'm using multiple, different valued Peer Envelopes, there's no easy way to trigger when they are switched 'on', without using the excellent and timesaving (though only Alpha) PeerCtrl machine. Each Cheapo Amp's Mute parameter is controlled by the PeerCtrl, making it not only much easier to edit when I want a retrigger to happen, but also avoiding a cluttered sequencer full of Cheapo Amps.
I set it up PeerCtrl kind of strangely: instead of remapping the values in the graphic thingy, I put FFFE's in every row of every column, thus defaulting the Cheapo Amps to mute. Anything but FFFE will then cause the corresponding amp machine to unmute, the PeerEnv to flood with sound, and the kicksyn to play a triplet or whatever.
Got it? Good.
If anyone want's I can make a simple template with this setup, for use in old songs or whathaveyou... Then again, maybe we'll have a PeerRetrigger soon, making this technique almost obsolete. Almost, because you can still do strange things with this, like using other synths and leads as source material for the PeerEnv's, causing retriggering on your drums every time your 303 clicks or something like that.
Ok, I'm going to take a nap now.

Umm.. I still don't know how that peer envelope shit works (or Peer anything for that matter). But I like it. Very Subtle yet interesting drums. What does everyone else think? What would you call this music?
